New Study Shows Abortion Priority among Democrats and GOP

A recent PRRI survey discovered that more Democratic voters than Republican voters now view abortion as an issue of critical importance to them; 47 percent of Democrats say that abortion is a high priority issue, with 61 percent viewing abortion as an important voting issue in the 2018 midterms, while only 40 percent of Republicans view abortion as a critical issue, and 44 percent viewing abortion as a voting issue in the midterms. This is a dramatic shift from 2015 when only 36 percent of Democrats, compared 43 percent of Republicans, viewed abortion as a critical issue, and from 2008, when only 38 percent of Democrats thought abortion was an important voting issue. The sudden increase in Democrats’ focus and importance on abortion comes at a time when more than 40% of Democrats believe that abortion is likely to become illegal in their lifetimes. The confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy has led many Democrats to believe abortion rights are under attack, with 64 percent of Democrats believing that Brett Kavanaugh will vote to overturn Roe v.
