First Lady of Afghanistan Rula Ghani spoke at the U.S. Institute of Peace last Wednesday to discuss the role of women in the peacemaking process. Women in Afghanistan have largely been left out of these conversations in the past, however, the First Lady stated that Afghan women, “are no longer going to wait for peace to fall in their laps. They’re going to work for it.” Since her husband took office, Rula Ghani has been an advocate for women in Afghanistan. She has promoted education for girls and has worked to improve women’s representation in schools and within public offices. In her first speech as First Lady, Rula Ghani encouraged women to expand their roles and work outside of the home, an idea that 74 percent of Afghan people now agree with, a record high. In addition, a large majority of Afghans (80.7%) agree that women should have equal opportunities to men. But when women were asked to name the greatest challenge they face, 36.1 percent voiced concern over illiteracy and access to education. After opening remarks by Nancy Lindburg, the President of the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), First Lady Ghani elaborated on the importance of Afghan women having […]<div>

Last week, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a 2018 foreign relations budget bill which includes an amendment that would increase funding for family planning worldwide and repeal Trump’s Global Gag Rule which prohibits any non-governmental organization that receives U.S. family planning funding from offering abortion services or referrals. The amendment received bipartisan support, with Senators Collins (R-Maine) and Murkowski (R-Alaska) voting with panel Democrats, and was added to the appropriations bill. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) added an amendment to amendment to the 2018 Fiscal Year State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs budget bill that would increase the funding for family planning to $622.5 million. The amendment contains language that would also effectively repeal the Mexico City Policy, commonly known as the Global Gag Rule which was reinstated by Donald Trump in January as one of his first acts as President. The bill will proceed to vote by the full Senate and  must reconcile with the House State and Foreign Operations budget bill for the 2018 fiscal year. In a press release, Senator Shaheen stated, “My amendment will preserve and restore funding levels for international organizations that help to prevent over fifty million unintended pregnancies around the world, and reduce the number of maternal […]<div>

On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court blocked a lower court’s decision that exempted refugees from the Trump Administration’s travel ban. The US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled that refugees who currently have contracts with resettlement sponsors or refugee organizations would be permitted to enter the country while the legality of travel ban is considered by the Supreme Court, who will hear the case in October. Last week’s decision of the Court of Appeals would have limited the scope of President Trump’s travel ban and exempted approximately 24,000 refugees. The Justice Department requested the Supreme Court review and block the decision made by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court announced their decision in a one paragraph statement, but offered no comment on the ruling to block the Court of Appeals’ decision. President Trump’s ban on people traveling from six majority Muslim countries, as allowed by the Supreme Court, went into effect in July. Travelers from Libya, Syria, Iran, Somalia, Yemen, and Sudan will be banned for 90 days if unable to provide a “bona fide relationship” connection to the United States. The Supreme Court ruled to allow the ban until the Court can hear the […]<div>

After the success of the Afghan Girls’ Robotics Team that visited the United States in July, more and more young girls in Afghanistan have expressed interest in becoming more involved with robotics and technology. The Afghan Girls’ Robotics Team participated in the First Global Challenge in Washington D.C. After the State Department denied the girls visas twice, widespread condemnation from feminist and humanitarian groups successfully put public pressure on the Department of Homeland Security to issue humanitarian paroles that allowed the girls to enter the country. The girls were awarded silver medals at the competition for their “courageous achievement.” Upon their return to Afghanistan, the Girls’ Robotics team was welcomed by President Ashrad Ghani and First Lady Rula Ghani, members of parliament, the Minister of Education, and several other state officials. Although they received a positive welcome, many still have concerns about the girls’ safety. Roya Mahboob, founder of the Afghan Citadel Software Company and CEO of the Digital Citizen Fund, said in an interview with the Feminist Majority Foundation that the Afghan Robotic have become a “symbol of courage and positive change in Afghanistan.” Families who did not want their daughters to come to the United States have asked Mahboob if […]<div>
